I posted this comparison image on social media and was surprised by the huge response I received from both clients and other photographers. Apparently people know that photographers have artistic vision, but few understand to what extent! Every year I drag my kids to this cherry blossom location and take their spring portraits. It’s a park off a tiny, quiet side street and honestly, you could blink and miss it. The park is narrow with a playground at the end of it that I have to begrudgingly & painstakingly photoshop out to get the bottom image you see, but I love the final result. It’s why I keep going back. My kids have been around me and my camera long enough to trust my photographic vision. So off we go, kicking and screaming. Lol.
But this is not the only location where people have to trust my artistic vision. Many times, I’ve arrived to an agreed upon location for an outdoor session and I encourage clients to think outside the box to envision what the end result will look like. It’s not so much about the location as it is about what I, as your portrait artist can create with that location. I understand that it can be hard to think abstractly but that’s why you hired an expert! So here’s my advice: TRUST YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER. If you don’t trust your photographer, get a new one! Find one that is skilled in transforming the mundane into the extraordinary! Look at their portfolio and find a photographer that matches your personal style and taste, because if you have their art on your walls, you want to be 100% in love with it! Find a photographer that you jive with, one that makes you laugh and that you feel comfortable being around. Trusting the artistic vision of your photographer is easier when you have built a relationship with them!
If you hire a newborn photographer, you need someone that has education & knowledge on how to gently and safely pose your baby on a fabric backdrop or in beautiful props. It’s so funny when I have a presession consultation with clients and I explain how I’m going to photograph their baby. They glance at my bean bag set up, and then they look at me completely perplexed asking, “How on earth?” And that’s where a portfolio of images comes in handy to show clients the end result. Then it all starts to make a little more sense. But the understanding really all comes together after they see their final images. That’s when they see how the magical concoction of light, angles, composition and of course photoshop, comes together to create beautiful imagery….art for their home.
…And turn it into the cutest metal bucket you have ever seen in your life. I mean, you’ll love that bucket so much you want to take it home WITH your baby!
Lastly, trust that your photographer has artistic vision to work with whatever location you agree on. Trust that they will make the focus about you and your family’s connection and less about the garbage can in the background that they can easily photoshop out. If your images are taken indoors or at a wedding, trust that your photographer will create stunning images no matter the location. Images that you will cherish forever.
Remember that we are the experts and we want you to trust our vision! If our portfolio speaks to you and you love our work, hire us to create beautiful images for your home!
That’s all for now folks!
Much Love & Light,
